Why the In-Between Moments Matter in Family Photography

There’s a moment I’m always watching for during a family photography session.
It’s not the one where everyone’s looking at the camera, smiling perfectly.

It’s the split second in between.

When your child leans into you without thinking.
When you brush their hair back from their face.
When they reach for your hand, or hide behind your legs, or look at you in that way that is so completely them.

Those are the moments that stay.

When families start thinking about family photos, it’s so normal to picture everyone smiling, looking at the camera, everything feeling a little bit “just right.”

And of course, those moments are lovely too.

But the ones that quietly hold the most meaning are usually the ones no one planned.

Siblings laughing playful outdoors

The pause between prompts.
The giggle that turns into a cuddle.
The serious little expression your child gives when they’re just taking it all in.

These are the moments that feel less like a posed photo… and more like a memory.

Sometimes, in the middle of a lifestyle family photography session, it might not feel like much is happening.

Your toddler might not want to sit still.
Your baby might need to be held the whole time.
Your child might not smile the way you expected.

And it’s so easy to think, “I don’t know if we got anything good.”

But I promise you, this is where the magic is.

Because what I’m looking for isn’t perfection.
It’s connection.
It’s the way your child fits into you.
The way you instinctively reach for them.
The little rhythms that make your family yours.

As a mum, I see these things a little differently too.

I notice the way your child’s hand wraps around your finger.
The way they soften when you pull them close.
The fleeting expressions that might be gone in a heartbeat but say so much about who they are right now.

These are the details that change so quickly, often before we even have a chance to notice them.

And these are the ones you’ll come back to.

During a session, I’ll always guide you gently, but I’m never trying to force something that isn’t there.

I’m watching.
Waiting.
Holding space for things to unfold naturally.

Because the most meaningful family photos aren’t created by perfect posing or stiff direction from a family photographer.
They happen in the in-between.

Years from now, it probably won’t be the perfectly posed photo that pulls at you the most.

It will be the one where your child is tucked into your side.
The one where you’re mid-laugh, or mid-soothe, or just quietly together.

The one that feels like a moment you’ve lived before.

The one that feels like them.

Those are the moments that stay.

As a family photographer based in Launceston, Tasmania, these are the moments I’m always drawn to most.
