What to Wear for Family Photos
When families book a session, one of the first questions is usually:
“What should we wear?”
And honestly?
You don’t need perfectly matching outfits or a completely curated wardrobe for beautiful family photos.
The goal of a family photography session isn’t perfection.
It’s connection.
What you wear should help your family feel comfortable, relaxed, and like yourselves, while also allowing the emotion and connection in your images to shine through naturally.
As a family photographer based in Launceston, I always encourage families to keep things simple, soft, and true to them.

Start With Comfort First
This matters more than people realise.
If children feel uncomfortable in stiff outfits, itchy fabrics, or clothing they wouldn’t normally wear, it tends to show pretty quickly during a session.
The same goes for adults.
Choose pieces you can move in easily, cuddle in, sit on the ground in, and walk around comfortably in, especially for outdoor golden hour sessions.
The more relaxed everyone feels, the more natural your family photos will feel too.
Instead of Matching, Think Coordinating
One of the biggest misconceptions about family photos is that everyone needs to match exactly.
In reality, the most timeless family photographs usually come from outfits that compliment each other rather than copy each other.
A soft, earthy colour palette photographs beautifully because it keeps the focus on your family rather than distracting patterns or overly bright colours.
Some tones that work especially well for outdoor family photography include:
- Cream
- Beige
- Soft white
- Warm browns
- Olive
- Rust
- Dusty blue
- Sage
- Muted pinks
- Warm neutrals
Denim and soft textures also photograph beautifully and add a little depth without feeling too busy.
Avoid Large Logos and Busy Patterns
Logos, neon colours, and very bold patterns can pull attention away from the connection in your images.
That doesn’t mean outfits need to feel plain or overly styled.
Texture is actually lovely in photographs: knits, linen, cotton, layered fabrics, flowing dresses, overalls for little ones, or clothing with natural movement all add warmth and interest.
The aim is simply to avoid anything that competes with the emotion in the image.

Let Children Be Themselves
Some of the most meaningful images happen when children feel like themselves.
A favourite cardigan.
Well-loved gumboots.
A special teddy.
A hat they insist on wearing.
These little details often become the things families treasure most later because they tell the story of this exact season of life.
Lifestyle family photography is about preserving connection and personality, not creating a perfectly polished version of childhood.

Think About Your Home Too
If you’re planning to print your images as framed artwork, canvases, or in a photo book, it can help to think about where your photographs might live afterward.
Soft, timeless tones tend to sit beautifully in most homes and help your images feel classic for years to come.
One of my favourite things is seeing family photographs become part of a home, not just something stored away digitally.
Most Importantly, Don’t Stress
Your children do not need to sit perfectly still.
They do not need to smile at the camera the entire time.
And your outfits do not need to be “perfect.”
The most beautiful family photos usually happen in the in-between moments:
the cuddles, movement, laughter, hand-holding, and quiet connection that naturally unfolds when everyone feels comfortable.
That’s always the focus.
If you’re ever unsure what to wear for your session, I’m always happy to help guide you with outfit ideas or colour palettes that photograph beautifully together while still feeling true to your family.
Because the best family photographs don’t come from perfectly coordinated outfits.
They come from feeling relaxed enough to simply be together.
If you’re dreaming of relaxed, natural family photos that feel like your family, I’d love to help you plan a session that feels easy and genuine from start to finish.
